Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused shockwaves (sound waves) to stimulate healing in soft tissues like tendons, ligaments, and muscles. It’s often used to treat chronic conditions that haven’t responded well to other treatments, such as physical therapy or medication.

During treatment, focused shockwaves are applied to the injured area. The sound waves travel through the skin and tissues, reaching the injured area with the following benefits

  • Promotes blood flow: The sound waves help to increase blood flow to the injured area, which can help to deliver nutrients and oxygen to the tissues and remove waste products.
  • Stimulates healing: The sound waves may also help to stimulate the growth of new tissue and blood vessels.
  • Breaks down scar tissue: Shockwave therapy may also help to break down scar tissue that can form around an injury, which can help to improve flexibility and range of motion.

Shockwave therapy is typically used for conditions such as:

  • Shoulder tendinitis and partial tears: This is inflammation or partial tearing of the tendons in the shoulder.
  • Plantar fasciitis: This is a common condition that causes pain in the arch and heel of the foot.
  • Achilles tendonitis: This is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which is the tendon that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone.
  • Tennis elbow: This is pain on the outside of the elbow that is caused by inflammation of the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the elbow bone.
  • Golfer’s elbow: This is pain on the inside of the elbow that is caused by inflammation of the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the elbow bone.
  • Chronic spinal pain

Shockwave therapy is generally a safe and well-tolerated treatment. However, it may not be right for everyone. Most people will experience some discomfort and some may have swelling at the treatment site. Shockwave therapy is also not recommended for pregnant women or people with certain medical conditions, such as pacemakers, bleeding disorders, cancer or infection.  Shockwave therapy is typically not covered by insurance.
