Did you know that there are over 150 different kinds of headaches? That’s a pretty painful number. Learning more about which type of headache you’re experiencing will be helpful. However, knowing is only half the battle. Finding a way to address the headache pain is just as important. That’s why we’re taking a more in-depth look at 4 common types of headaches and how chiropractic care can help.

Types of Headaches & How Chiropractic Care Can Help

4 Types of Headaches

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are headaches that occur in patterns or “clusters.” These are severe headaches that occur in groups over a period of time, usually ranging from a few weeks to a few months. With a cluster headache, the pain is felt on one side of the head. The eye on the side of the head experiencing the pain may droop, have a small pupil, or become red. A stuffy or runny nose can also occur.

Tension Headaches

Also called stress headaches, tension headaches are the most common type of headaches. Tension headaches can be triggered by stress, poor posture, a bad night’s sleep, and other outside factors. With a tension headache, mild to moderate pain is felt on both sides of the head. Pain can also come up through the neck, crossing over the skull to the forehead.

Migraines

A migraine is an intense headache that can last from 4 hours to a few days. With migraines come symptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light. Migraines are noted as a pulsing or throbbing pain felt on one side of the head. Migraine pain can also occur in different parts of the head, face, or neck.

Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches are caused by an inflammation of the sinuses- the cavities in your head. Pain in the front of your face that extends through the cheeks and forehead is most likely a sinus headache. You may have other symptoms, such as a runny nose or the feeling that your ears are clogged.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help with Headaches?

When the body is out of its natural alignment, it can not function properly, thus resulting in issues that can trigger headaches. Working with a chiropractor allows those suffering from common types of headaches to pinpoint the root cause of the pain. A chiropractor will then perform adjustments using proven techniques to manipulate the body back to proper alignment. Chiropractic adjustments have shown to be as or even more effective than medications in reducing the severity and frequency of headaches. Medication masks the pain, whereas chiropractic care works to keep the pain from occurring by optimizing the health of the whole human system.
