Spinal Decompression: An Alternative to Surgery
Are you suffering from back or neck pain? Do you have bulging or herniated discs and are being told that surgery may be your only option? Spinal decompression can be a great alternative to back surgery.
What is spinal decompression?
Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical treatment to relieve neck or back pain and other problems associated with spinal disc injuries. This treatment provides gentle decompression of the discs through the use of a special table. The table involves motorized traction that works by gently stretching the spine, giving relief to affected discs.
How do discs affect the pain I’m feeling?
Spinal discs are essentially the cushioning between the bones in your spine. When this cushioning is damaged (bulging or herniated discs) it can create pain throughout the body. The pain stems from the spine but can be felt even throughout your arms and legs.
How does the spinal decompression table work?
When taking part in spinal decompression, you are strapped to the table so that as it moves it applies a distraction force to the targeted area of the spine. The spine is gently pulled apart, creating a ‘vacuum effect’ within the compressed disc. Everything is controlled through the use of a computer that mixes the distraction force with periods of rest. Spinal decompression therapy creates changes in small increments, which over time allow the disc to heal by retracting back to its normal position.
Study results have shown that spinal decompression is an effective treatment for reducing pain in the spine and can even restore disc height. If you are still unsure as to whether spinal decompression is a good alternative for you, be sure to check back in a few weeks for part II.
